Welcome to Networking Unleashed: Building Profitable Connections, the show where better conversations lead to better opportunities. I'm your host, Michael Foreman. Today, we're tackling a topic that many professionals quietly avoid: money. People discuss marketing, strategy, branding, and growth all day long, but the moment a real financial conversation enters the room, the energy shifts.

Yet, business relationships, referrals, partnerships, and opportunities are all connected to how comfortable we are discussing value. My guest today believes there is no shame in earning a dollar. Money is simply a tool, and the relationships we build affect our careers, family decisions, and future direction.

We're diving into how your money mindset shapes your networking. Avoiding financial conversations limits opportunity, while honest discussions about value can strengthen trust. If you want clearer conversations, stronger relationships, and opportunities that align with your life—not just your calendar—you're in the right place.

Understanding the Money Mindset

So let's dive into it. I'd like to welcome to the podcast, Andrew. Andrew, you have a wealth of experience. Could you please introduce yourself to my audience?

Andrew: Thanks for inviting me on, Michael. It's great to be here. I'm a huge fan of your show. Your audience is definitely in the right spot to learn. I have an interesting start; I accidentally became a financial advisor.

I was involved in biotech and pharmaceuticals before this. A core part of me always wanted to be a helpful member of my community. I wanted to network, grow, and leave every interaction better than when we started. In corporate America, I often felt something was off. I was constantly looking for ways to learn and grow, but I felt a disconnect.

A couple of years ago, I sat down and asked myself what I wanted to learn that year. One of my goals was to learn more about personal finance. I had a financial advisor, but I still struggled with it. Later that year, someone reached out to me and asked if I had ever considered becoming a financial advisor. I was surprised because my background was in biology, not finance.

The more we talked, the more attractive the idea became. I realised I could have a direct impact on my community. Now, I am a business owner, and I’m grateful for the support system around me. I’ve found where I want to be for the next 30 years.

The Importance of Financial Conversations

It sounds like you’ve found your home. Many professionals feel uncomfortable talking about money. Why does that hesitation hurt their networking more than they realise?

Andrew: When you're uncomfortable with a topic, your body language and tone communicate that. Underlying this is self-worth. Money can be a taboo subject. In my childhood, it wasn't polite to ask how much someone paid for a car or dinner.

When networking, you have value to bring to the conversation. You deserve to be there. Your time is as valuable as anyone else's. If you have self-belief and confidence, it opens you up to new ideas. Conversations flow more naturally, leading to potential business ideas or connections.

Once you’re confident in yourself, there’s no telling what you can achieve. Being a connector in the community means introducing people who can help each other. That’s how you become a valuable part of the community.

Embracing a Healthy View of Money

You say there's no shame in earning a dollar. How does a healthy view of money change the way people build and maintain relationships?

Andrew: I often hear people say, "I should have done this," or "I could have done that." What you’ve done in the past is just that—past. Where you want to go is what matters. You are a 10 out of 10. When you view money as a tool, you realise that your ability to work and connect with others is your biggest asset.

If you’re not able to connect with people, many opportunities won’t happen. Our ability to work and connect is crucial for vacations, home repairs, and retirement. Money is a tool, and you are the weapon we’re honing to craft your future.

Timing Financial Conversations

At what point should financial conversations naturally enter a relationship without making it feel transactional?

Andrew: If you’re in your twenties, it might be tough to hear, but start a habit of discussing finances early. Time is your biggest asset when it comes to investing and saving. When discussing a job opportunity, bring up your expectations regarding value right away.

With friends, it seems easier to avoid money talk. I encourage people to ask questions if they trust the other person. If you notice someone has done well, ask them how they achieved that. Give them the chance to say no; often, they won’t. Questions are the roots of all knowledge.

If you approach someone on LinkedIn and say, "I have a couple of questions," most people will be willing to help. Networking events are great for asking questions. People love to share their knowledge.

The Role of Healthy Skepticism

Be wary of financial advice you find online. Apply healthy skepticism and understand where the information is coming from. The more knowledgeable and licensed a person is, the less specific information they will provide online.

For instance, if I told you to buy a specific stock and you lost money, you could sue me. So, I won’t provide specific investment advice online. There's a mantra: "Know, like, and trust." Without trust, you won’t do business with someone.

Being Genuine in Networking

How can someone be genuine in networking while still being clear about the business value they bring?

Andrew: Start conversations with a simple, "Hi, my name is... What brings you here?" Try to communicate what you do in 18 words or less. This approach makes you memorable. I coach professionals to refine their 30-second pitches down to 10 seconds.

When you’re at a networking event, focus on one thing you want to communicate. This way, you won’t overload your audience. Make yourself memorable, and build relationships over time.

Money as a Tool for Freedom

You describe money as a tool. What does it help people do inside relationships that they often overlook?

Andrew: Money creates options and flexibility. It allows you to say yes or no on your terms. This freedom lets you be more present in your relationships. People often talk about money in terms of costs, but we should focus on experiences.

If you can enjoy your day and feel fulfilled, that’s a win. Money should be a tool that enables you to create those experiences.

Balancing Service and Business

Some people avoid discussing opportunities because they don’t want to appear self-interested. How do you balance service and business?

Andrew: It comes down to your intentions. If you approach your job with a service mindset, it will come across authentically. Ask others what they are most proud of. This question can reveal their values and help you gauge whether you vibe with them.

Holistic View of Life

When someone considers their world holistically—career, family, finances, community—how does that change who they connect with?

Andrew: It’s essential to think about what will matter when you’re older. Reflect on your life and what truly matters. If something doesn’t matter in the long run, it’s easier to let it go.

This perspective can liberate you from stress and help you focus on what truly counts.

Signs of a Mutually Beneficial Relationship

What signs show a relationship is mutually beneficial versus quietly one-sided?

Andrew: If both parties leave the conversation smiling, you’re on the right track. However, be cautious of relationships that feel one-sided. I once made a costly mistake by investing in a networking opportunity that turned out to be a scam.

Always trust your instincts and be wary of rush tactics. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Taking Action

To wrap up, if a listener wants stronger relationships and healthier financial outcomes in the next 90 days, what networking behaviour should they start immediately?

Andrew: Have an honest conversation with yourself about your finances. Create a budget and review it with your spouse. This can be eye-opening. If you’re uncomfortable with what you see, something needs to change.

If you want more information, visit no shame in a dollar.

This conversation reminds us that networking isn't just about who you meet; it's about how openly and honestly you communicate value. When people are comfortable discussing goals, expectations, and opportunities, relationships become clearer, and decisions become easier.

If today's episode made you rethink your approach to conversations about value, try one small step this week: have one honest, respectful business conversation you may have been avoiding. You’ll be surprised how often clarity strengthens trust.
